Dwayne Haskins’ life was tragically cut short when he was hit by a dump truck as he attempted to cross a highway for fuel. A standout athlete, Haskins made his mark at Ohio State, playing two remarkable seasons from 2017 to 2018. His final season with the Buckeyes was nothing short of legendary, culminating in 50 touchdowns and only eight interceptions, amassing a total of 4,831 passing yards.

After his collegiate success, he was selected by the Washington Commanders in the NFL Draft. Dwayne’s professional journey included a stint as the backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021 season.

In Florida, a lawsuit has been initiated by Kalabrya and the parents of Haskins, although it doesn’t provide additional information about the claims made.

According to the lawsuit, Oriel Patino, who was operating the dump truck, is accused of negligent driving, going over the speed limit, and not keeping the truck’s brakes and tires in proper working order.

The toxicology results revealed that Haskins had alcohol levels in his system that were three times higher than the state’s legal driving limit of 0.08.

Furthermore, Haskins had substances in his system, specifically ketamine and norketamine, which are typically used for anesthesia in medical settings but are sometimes also used for non-medical purposes.

A Steelers team member reported to the authorities that after a practice session, Haskins dined with his cousin and subsequently visited a club. The evening involved considerable drinking, which eventually led to a disagreement and the two parting ways, as noted in the medical examiner’s report.

On the day Haskins passed away, Kalabrya informed emergency services through a 911 call that her husband, the Steelers quarterback, was stranded on a Florida highway needing to fetch fuel.

Kalabrya, who wasn’t present with Haskins at his time of passing, told the operator that Haskins was alone and on foot. She mentioned that he intended to call her back once he had refueled his vehicle.

The medical examiner’s findings also mentioned an unidentified woman in Haskins’ car, discovered parked on the roadside. This woman, whose connection to Haskins remains undisclosed, informed the Florida Highway Patrol that Haskins had exited the car in search of gasoline.

Haskins, celebrated as a former Rose Bowl Most Valuable Player and a contender for the Heisman Trophy during his time at Ohio State, was chosen 15th overall by Washington in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Kalabrya, a former basketball player at Michigan State, is related to Kysre Gondrezick, a professional basketball player in the WNBA.
