The Rush

When someone injects or smokes methamphetamine, they experience the first response called the rush. It is a feeling of intense stimulation and excitement that the abuser feels. During the rush, their heart beats faster, their metabolism increase and their blood pressure and pulse skyrocket.

Unlike the rush caused by crack cocaine, which mainly lasts for a short period of two to five minutes, the methamphetamine rush can last for as long as thirty minutes.

The High

After facing the rush, there comes a phase known as the high, also known as “the shoulder.” During this period of time, the person who abused methamphetamine usually feels a sense of intelligence and may become frequently interrupt others and finishing their sentences.

The delusional effects can cause the user to fixate intensely on something trivial, like spending hours cleaning the same window again and again. The high can persist for a time of 4-16 hours.

The Binge

A binge refers to the uncontrolled and excessive use of alcohol or drugs. In the context of methamphetamine, it describes the need of the abuser to prolong the high by continuously injecting or smoking more of the substances. This binge phase can persist for a period ranging from 3-15 days.

Throughout the binge, the person becomes highly active both physically and mentally. With the use of drugs, teh abuser experiences another rush, although it tends to be smaller compared to the initial rush. In the last, teh rush diminishes, and there is no longer a high experience.

Tweaking

One of the most dangerous phases of methamphetamine addiction is known as “tweaking.” It occurs when a methamphetamine abuser reaches the end of a drug binge; the abuser is unable to heighten the overwhelming feelings of cravings and emptiness, leading to a loss of their sense of identity. It is common for itching to occur, and the person may develop a belief that bugs are crawling under their skin.

They are unable to sleep for several days, resulting in a state of complete psychosis. They live in their own world, experiencing hallucinations that are so vivid, they seem real. The person can become hostile and pose a danger to themselves and others once disconnected from reality. During this phase, there is a high potential for self-harm.

The Crash

For someone engaged in a binge, the crash occurs when the body reaches a point where it can no longer handle the overwhelming effects of the drug, leading to a long time of sleep. Even people who are mainly abuser and aggressive turns out to be completely inactive during the crash. This phase takes place for about 1-3 days.

Meth Hangover

After the crash takes place, the people who abused methamphetamine face a state of mental, physical, and emotionally exhausted. This stage typically lasts from 2-14 days of time. As a result, the person feels compelled to continue using meth as a way to enforce these distressing feelings, perpetuating their addiction.

Withdrawal

It only takes about 30-90 days after the last drug use for a person to know that they are experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Initially, they may feel lacking in energy level, depressed, and unable to derive pleasure from things.

This is followed by intense cravings for more methamphetamine is known to be extremely challenging and  painful as well, which is why the majority of people who undergo traditional treatment end up relapsing. In fact, approximately 93% of those in such treatment programs return to abusing methamphetamine.

How long does a Meth high last?

The length of time someone feels high on meth can vary for different reasons. Usually, it lasts for about 4 to 16 hours, but it depends on how far along they are in the high. The duration of meth’s effects also depends on when and how the person took the drug.

Meth highs happen in different stages, beginning with a strong feeling and ending with a sudden drop in energy.
