When people stop working and retire, the retirement part gives them some money every month. This money is taxed.

If you signed up for the Canada Pension Plan, you can see when you will get your money on the official Canada government website. The last time they paid CPP was on September 27, 2023. Next time, they will pay on October 27, 2023.

Canada Pension Plan Payment

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) gives money every month to people who are eligible and have paid into it. There are two main parts to the CPP. To get the CPP Retirement Pension, you need to be at least 60 years old and have paid into the CPP at least once.

To get the CPP disability benefit, you need to be under 65 years old, have paid enough into the CPP, and have a long-term disability that makes it hard for you to work and earn money because of a physical or mental problem.

Also, the CPP Disability has two major types of benefits:

  • CPP disability benefit
  • CPP post-retirement disability benefit

Applicants can check if they can get CPP Disability Benefit on the official Canadian government website. If you apply online, you might get your CPP payment in 7 to 28 days. If you apply by mail or in person, it might take 120 days.

However, after you send your CPP application, it could take up to 4 months for them to decide. They will look at your whole application and a doctor’s report. If you have a very serious illness, they will try to decide within 5 business days.

CPP Payment Increase

Starting in 2019, the CPP payments have been going up bit by bit. However, these higher payments only apply to people who started paying into CPP in 2019 or later. People working today have to put in a little more money, but they will get more money back later on and have better financial security.

The 2019 change to CPP has two parts: one from 2019 to 2023 and another from 2024 to 2025.

CPP Limit and Amount

The amount you get from CPP depends on when you start, how much money you make on average, and how much you put into CPP. You can check the most you can get in 2023 on the official Canadian government website.

People getting CPP payments might also get other benefits like money after they retire, money if they die, money for their family if they pass away, money if they get sick after retiring, and money for their kids. You can start getting this money at 60, but it is the most when you are 70.

When You Can Get CPP

Most people begin getting CPP at 65. However, you can start as early as 60 or as late as 70. You have to apply before the day you want your pension to begin. Once you apply, you should hear back within 28 days.

If you start getting your pension early, you’ll get less money each month. If you wait until later, you will get more money every month. The most you can get each month is when you are 70.

If you make more than $66,600 in 2023, you will get a full year’s worth of CPP benefits, which is $3,754 in total.

CPP Payment Increase in 2023-2024

In 2024 and 2025, the CPP payments for Canadians will be higher, making up about a third of the money they earned from work since 2019. So, if you have been putting money into CPP since January 1, 2019, you might get more CPP money.

The most money you can earn and still get CPP is going up by 4% for Canadians who make more than a certain amount in 2024. In 2025, the limit for the next level is going up by 7%, and the one after that by 14%.
